What This Nurse Massage Therapist Didn’t Know…

(This little story of mine is one example why nurses, massage therapists, and other wellness professionals need to learn how to market!!)

Three months ago I was getting out of my car in Whole Foods parking lot and I heard someone say to me "I like your license plate! I use those same essential oils!" ( I have a Young Living "One Drop At A Time" license plate frame that I got from the company many years ago).

We had a fun chat on the way into the store – she was a nurse massage therapist who had just relocated to the area from out west and has been using Young Living Essential Oils in her practice for many years.

I was thrilled to meet her for many reasons – one of which I had just been thinking how much I needed a massage. I was even more thrilled when I learned she lived within a mile of my home.

We exchanged contact info and I called her to set up an appointment. She was happy to start getting some business. I had a wonderful session and told her that I would definitely want another appointment with her!

Life got busy over the holidays and I was extra busy with having my 87 year old Aunt Rita with me (who is in a wheelchair and needs assistance). I had much more physical stress on my body than normal and I would listen daily to this voice in back of my mind "oh!! I need another massage" – – – – –

– – – but did I take the time to look for that little piece of paper with Mandy’s name and number on it? No. Because I didn’t make it a priority, even though I wanted and needed another massage.

Then I got to thinking "hmm….it would be so perfect if she would call me……….hmm…….why didn’t she call me?…….hmmm, well jeez! If she wanted to build her practice, I would think she would pick up the phone and do a follow up call – and that would be perfect! It would save me from scrounging for her number, she would book another session, I could become a steady client……… a real win / win.

I chuckled because I coach nurses, massage therapists, and other wellness professionals on marketing and building their businesses and practices, and on how to get more clients and keep the ones they have. How ironic. But how perfect! This is a blazing example of what I hear so often from clients and others in the industry – that want to build their businesses and practices, but don’t take the steps needed to do so.

I often hear them say "oh, I don’t want to call people – I don’t want to bother them." OMG – these folks don’t realize how helpful it would be to take that one little action! If a few days after the session, they just give a quick call to check in. We (people who are their clients) LOVE hearing from you!

Ok – so I did look around for Mandy’s number. Couldn’t find it. Wish she did call. And, yes, I can drive over to her house and leave a note on her car. But should a client have to do that?

Here is the problem the way I see it. There are blocks and barriers that Wellness Professionals have to ‘sales’ and marketing – based on many engrained belief systems and even some practical things (lack of marketing skills, tools, know how, fear of the internet, etc).

It’s very important to overcome those blocks, barriers, and all resistances – so they can deliver great care and build prosperous practices.
