Complementary Therapies are natural safe, non-invasive, and inexpensive practices that help to augment physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual care. They are most effective in the areas of pain management, palliative care, and creating inner peace. These therapies include Massage, Healing Touch, Reiki, Music, Art, Acupuncture, Pet Therapy, and Aromatherapy.
Complementary Therapies can be effective in End of Life Care because they work with nature and natural forces to create harmony and balance in one’s life and environment, no matter what the condition of health or stage of life. These practices lend themselves to healing which is ‘achieving wholeness’ at any stage of life, versus curing which is a full elimination of pathological symptoms. Healing can happen at end of life and through the death and dying process.
This Fund was created in 2002 by Marilee Tolen through her Professional Health Care Symposium she held “Peaceful Passages™: Complementary Therapies in End of Life Care”. The M J Tolen Scholarship Fund was set up on honor of her parents whose peaceful deaths demonstrated what is possible given the proper conditions and access to complementary therapies for comfort, care, and love.
“I cannot pretend to speak of death as a misfortune . . . Death is the arch of triumph under which the soul passes to live again in a purer
and freer atmosphere.” – Florence Nightingale
