Healers and other professionals in the Wellness industry still occasionally get a bad rap in conventional health care circles among both professionals and consumers. The holistic services we offer, no matter how effective, are not always taken seriously and often relegated to ‘hippiedom’.
(def. hippiedom – state or quality
of being a hippie)
Hippies, born out of the 1960’s, promoted peace, love, harmony, unity, organic lifestyles, non-violence, giving things away for free (and some people would say many more things – good AND bad!)
OK, I’m a daughter of a mother who taught us to hug trees, I’m also a Nurse Healer, and have been a teacher of the healing arts (all ages of students).
I don’t like admitting this, but I’ve noticed that healers and wellness professionals who are baby-boomer flower-children of the 60’s, and their descendants in X, Y, or Z generations, DO have some trickled-down characteristics from the ‘hug and drug’ days that likely affect the way they run their practices and businesses.
What was birthed in the ‘hippie’ era changed the world in many ways and brought forth unchartered territories of personal freedom and empowerment for many people which included how to use nature and natural forces to self care and health care.
We could discuss the many ways ‘hippiedom’ has transmuted into ‘holism’, but for the purpose of this article I want to specifically highlight on how it affects FINANCES!
No doubt, Healers (I use this term broadly and professionally, because ‘Healer’ is a professional designation for Energy Medicine Practitioners, and, it can be applied to the Natural Health professional practitioner whose non-medicinal modalities allow their clients’ to access their ‘inner healer’).
So, I was saying, no doubt…….it is not unusual for Healers (and other alternative, health and wellness professionals) to have challenges making money in their practices and businesses that will allow them to live a comfortable lifestyle free of financial pressure. This is a ‘known’ in the industry.
The ‘marketing expert’ inside of me examines this issue frequently as I have many clients who deal with this problem. And, although I have a more entrepreneurial spirit than many of my colleagues, I too, was stricken with this early in my entrepre-Nursing career.
In looking at ‘hippie history’ I’m wondering if it might be a contributing factor to the ‘scarcity consciousness’ that afflicts so many healers.
If being a sixties child, or a descendant of one, does impact our ability to make more money in our practices and businesses, I’ve listed out how we can ‘Take the Hippie Out of the Healer’ to get more clients, grow our practices and businesses, and have more profitability and prosperity:
How to ‘Take the Hippie Out of the Healer’
1. Turn your peace, love, and charitable thoughts into productive actions that will reap financial benefits so you can give more and help more people.
2. Gain the courage to consider owning some of the conventional (financial common-sense) values you once rejected.
3. Consider that spiritual freedom is more possible with financial prosperity.
4. View money as a form of energy.
5. Know that the more money we have the more people we can hug (help).
6. Respect the Laws of Nature that tell us ‘exchange’ is important and, therefore, something must be given back to you of equal or greater value for the incredible
services you offer.
So getting back to the ‘not being taken so seriously’ part….and being ‘relegated’ to hippiedom…….
One way that we can overcome this is to Make More Money!
Becoming more prosperous in your practice is one of the most surefire ways to promote Peace, Love, & Joy!
